Letter From Current AFASW President
Hello USAFA Graduates,
I'm very
pleased to take on the role of President of the Air Force Academy Society of Washington, D.C. Our purpose is to "build
on Air Force Academy shared experiences and values to foster personal and
professional success." I look forward to furthering our progress
towards our goals over the next year.
Why do
we need a Society? I know from my own experience that after the
camaraderie of the military, the business world can be a lonely place. It
is often not wise to share your thoughts with colleagues at work. The
spectrum of values and beliefs "out there" is quite broad. The
path to success and rules of behavior are less obvious and there is less
structure to rely on. The Society is a place where grads can speak openly,
ask for tips, learn interesting aspects of business from our speakers, and meet
other grads that could be good contacts for suppliers, teammates, customers and
clients.
We
begin each meeting with a networking cocktail period, which is very valuable
time -- but it's not all partying. We then sit down or take a tour and
learn -- at our first meeting this year, a grad who is an SEC Commissioner will
talk about public companies, the major problems in corporate governance that
have been in the news, and his perspective from the agency that has the charter
to oversee and regulate public companies in a manner that promotes the public's
trust. Thanks to outgoing President, Gordy Kage '71, and the past Board of
Directors, I came on board with a super start to our new year and I plan to keep
the ball rolling, so watch for more great programs.
The
Society is also a place grads can gather to discuss issues related to the
Academy and if the issue is important enough, and views are strong enough,
present the viewpoint of a significant and influential group of graduates to the
appropriate audience. This has been one of our goals and we plan to take
action when needed.
Thank
you for your interest in the Air Force Academy Society of Washington D.C. and I
look forward to seeing you at a meeting soon!!
